Logistics of itinerary and advices

Hello,

I’m planning a 14 days trip to Thailand including the New Year’s Eve in Bangkok and I’d like to get some advice about how to handle the logistics in a best way, also how much time would be appropriate to spend at each location and what’s the best way to move between the places:

1.) I come to Bangkok and stay for 3 days (3 out of 13 full days)

2.) __Seeing the North__

4th day: I’m hesitating if it’s a good idea and if there’s time to visit Ayutthaya – come in the morning, look around and leave at evening for Chiang Mai? Or, considering the rest of the plan below, is it wiser to skip it and fly directly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?

3.) Now I’m lost on how much time I should spend where and the order of seeing stuff. :) The ideas for north of Thailand include: Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai, elephant sanctuaries, jungle treks or visiting hill tribes. It is a must for me to see Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai. What would be the best itinerary here for 3 or 4 days?

4.) __Moving from North to South__

This is where my logistics lack the most. In south, I wanted to mainly visit Krabi and Phi Phi on the one side, and Koh Phangan and Koh Tao on the other side. My questions:

a) Is it possible to make all this in 6 days without hurrying like crazy? Is it better to stay on “one side” (krabi and phi phi OR Phangan and Tao)?

b) What’s the best way to get from the north (Chiang Mai) to the south? Is it better to go to the area of Krabi first and then by the bus to Don Sak and to Phangan?

5.) __End of the trip__

On the last 14th day, I leave for Bangkok and from there back home to Europe. From what location in the south is it the best to get back to Bangkok, considering my plans?

I know it’s a lot of questions and it might seem confusing so I’ll be very thankful for any tips and advices I could get. I know less is more and it’s worth to visit Thailand multiple times so would it perhaps be a better idea to skip the North for now and just do Bangkok and the south? Thanks a lot for any input of you guys!
