‘Lefty’ becomes hero instead of TV commentator

Phil Mickelson’s British Open victory at Muirfield in 2013 was supposed to be his last hurrah but he had his second hurray last week at Kiawah Island’s windswept Ocean Course, one of the hardest layouts in the world.

He produced a history-making performance at the PGA Championship to become the oldest major champion at 50.

Mickelson displayed a strong mental game that he maintained to win his sixth major title.

He is already one of the top-15 players of all-time in major wins, but now belongs in even more exclusive company, joining Nick Faldo and Lee Trevino with six major crowns.

With his 51st birthday not far off, Mickelson hadn’t posted a top-10 finish in a major in five years but inwardly he thought that his game was still there and swallowed his pride and accepted a special exemption into next month’s US Open.
