Is a scooter safe to drive in Chiang Mai?

I have to commute everyday to school once I get to Chiang Mai. My commute is 5km from my house to school. Is Chiang Mai fairly safe to scooter around? How are drivers? Aggressive? Laid back?
I live in L.A now, so that would be what I’m comparing things to.

Edit: Thank you everyone for the responses. I don’t want to risk getting injured so I’m going to rely on Grab and my bicycle. Hopefully the roads are not to crazy for a bike. I really don’t want to ruin my trip, especially because my work is really physical and it could compromise my entire life.

Im really excited to head out to Thailand, it’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid.

Here Now: Ya’ll. Let me just say, I’m glad I didn’t rent a scooter. You must be a very skilled scooter driver who is either very aggressive or very defensive, there is no in-between. Traffic laws seems to be non-existent. As a pedestrian I almost got hit crossing the road with the crosswalk (crosswalks are rare around here) saying I could go, I thought everyone stopped and then a truck blew right through the stop light. Lucky for me my husband stopped me from fully crossing. And these streets are not bicycle friendly either. I’m also happy I DIDN’T bring my roller skates, let’s just say, the streets are VERY textured.

Other than all that, I’m having a good time, eating way too much, learning a lot and I can’t believe I waited this long to get my ass out here.
