Indian railway bridge collapses while under construction, 26 dead, many missing

A railway bridge in India collapses during construction. Causing at least 26 workers to die, many more missing. Authorities are now investigating the cause.

Foreign news agencies reported that a railway bridge under construction in Sairang, Mizoram State, Northeastern India. Partially collapsed on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, causing at least 26 deaths and many more missing. Because at the time of the incident there were about 40 workers

This happened above the Kurung River. which is far from the city of Aizawl Just 20km from the state capital of Mizoram, only three victims have been rescued so far. One of them was brought down from the top of a 100m bridge pier and sustained some degree of injury.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office released a statement saying: Authorities are providing all assistance to those affected. The government will also provide compensation of about 200,000 rupees to the relatives of the deceased.

The Indian Railways official said They are investigating the cause of the bridge collapse. He added that all the victims were from West Bengal.

The bridge where the incident happened was part of the railway line. Camrang-Sih Mui (Khamrang-Sihhmui), a distance of 51 kilometers, is scheduled to be completed in December this year. After almost 2 years of construction
