India-Thailand digital payment systems link-up in the works


BANGKOK: The RBI and Bank of Thailand are in talks for a tie-up of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with PromptPay of Thailand for digital payments and an announcement on this will be made soon, said Nagesh Singh, ambassador of India to Thailand. Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool confirmed that the process is on for the link-up.
“We are working on it and soon we will try to connect UPI with PromptPay of Thailand.RBI and Bank of Thailand have been in negotiations. Very soon you will hear the good news,” said Singh. “Here (Thailand) we have one of the best cashless societies. And the negotiations are progressing well,” said Kiatphaibool.
PromptPay is a Thai real time inter-bank payment system, that allows consumers to transfer money using a phone number, QR code, citizen ID, tax ID or a bank account.
