How to use Re-Entey Permit?

The process for obtaining the Re-Entry Permit is well documented and straightforward. However I’m confused as to how this is used when returning to Thailand.

What happens when you show the permit to the Immigration Officer at the airport? Do they stamp something over it or on the same page as the permit stamp? If so, what would the stamp look like?
