Get sweet summer lips

Burt’s Bees has been synonymous with lip care since 1991, when Roxanne Quimby made a lip balm based on a recipe she found in a 19th century farmer’s journal.

Seven years beforehand Quimby met US beekeeper Burt Shavitz while hitching a ride from him in Maine. They partnered in making candles from unused beeswax, and the bearded and free spirited Shavitz became the namesake of Burt’s Bees.

From a rural operation, Burt’s Bees relocated to Durham, North Carolina, in 1994, and expanded its business to natural skincare and personal care products.

Today the company responsibly sources beeswax from around the world, such as those wild-harvested in Tanzania and from backyard beekeepers in Vietnam.
