Born around 1162, Genghis Khan (aka Temujin, which I’ll use interchangeably) grew up in a very violent place and time in history. Warfare between tribes and clans was the norm in Mongolia. When Khan was nine, his father was poisoned to death by a rival tribe. He then fought with and killed his half-brother to head the family. At 16, he got married, but not long after his wife was kidnapped and made a wife to another rival’s leader. Khan rescued her. Together they bore four sons. There was a distinct possibility his first son had the kidnapper’s DNA.

At 20, he was captured and made into a slave until his escape. From then on, Temujin grew in strength and skills, united different tribes, and built up a huge army. Most importantly was his unleashing merciless brutality on anyone who opposed him. Indeed, he took great pains to avenge his father’s murder. That whole rival’s tribe…
