Former deputy PM and SAP founder passes away at 93

Pong Sarasin, a former deputy prime minister in two governments and co-founder of the Social Action Party (SAP), has died. He was 93.

A royally-sponsored bathing rite is being held for Pong, who died of natural causes, at Wat Benchamabophit in Bangkok on Thursday. Born in 1927 into a prominent business family, Pong graduated with a degree in accountancy from Boston University in the US. He worked at the Bank of Thailand and the Department of Administrative Intelligence and in 1973, entered politics, becoming a member of the National Legislative Assembly. In 1976 he became a senator.
