Forced to swim and dodge rocks, Thai boy scout found dead in pond

Family and friends of a 15-year-old boy in the northeast province of Kalasin were mourning his death today after he apparently drowned in a pond during a scouting event.

Police were questioning teachers and students at the Baan Na Ko Witthaya School after the ninth-grader suspiciously drowned following drills during which students said they were forced to swim in their uniforms while dodging thrown stones. 

The boy’s body was found by divers last night near the school in 3 meters of water.

A friend of the deceased told police that the students were forced Tuesday to dive into okay :the pond as part of “escape from war” training in which they pretended the rocks thrown at them were bombs. 

No swimming or flotation gear was provided to the youths, according to a witness.
