Football rules board approves permanent use of five substitutes

FIFA president Gianni Infantino says a move to five substitutes has ‘strong support from the entire football community’.

DOHA: Football’s rules body on Monday said five substitutes would be permanently introduced for all top-level matches and a semi-automated offside detector is closer to being used at this year’s World Cup.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the change to more substitutes, which was first allowed in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, followed “strong support from the entire football community”.

He said after the annual meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) that experts would decide on whether offside detection technology would be used for the World Cup that starts November…
