Flying into Bkk

I will be in Bangkok for 10 days at the beginning of September . Looking for a good safe hotel with gym close to good restaurants, public transportation and attractions. Any recommendations for someone coming to Thailand for the first time? Also, recommendations for international cell phone service. Trying to stay in touch with family and work back in the states.
