Etiquette – do you thank security guards when they raise the parking arm?

So I know I should probably know this by now, but I do know some things like how you don’t Sawadee some people based on job description (I tend to do it anyway).

But what about security guards? Do people normally thank them when entering/leaving moobans and condos? I just left a friend’s condo and said ‘Khob Khun Krub’ as I drove off. The man shouted after me ‘Phood Dee Dee’ in a *very* aggressive tone and I was shocked. He asked me the unit number, and I probably shouldn’t have said anything, but what the hell? Do people not thank security guards here? I don’t know why he would think I was insulting him, even if he may have not understood me perfectly. I didn’t clarify anything in the end as I was still hella surprised. When I drop my girlfriend off, the guards are always super friendly. Maybe it happened too quickly for him to process (the dude’s quite old), with a random foreigner rolling down his window and all.

I feel like the EmQuartier guards ignore me as well, but at the same time the Terminal 21 guards make me think like it is normal to thank them when they raise the arm. It’s in my nature to do so but if it’s wrong to be polite then I may need to rethink some things.
