Decoding Sak Yant

I just came across a very good source that may answer many of the questions about the meaning of “Sak Yant” that have been asked here.

This video **[Decoding Sacred Thai Yant](https://youtu.be/1TE3Dqw84qw)** is by Stuart Jay Raj, a “farang” who is expert in Thai (and many other) languages. If anyone learn Thai, I’m sure you have come across him once. He understands Thai language (including dialects) and culture more than maybe half of Thai people, including me.

In short, the Yant scripts come from Khom Script. So if you ask Thai people, we do not know it. But the script is mapped to Thai alphabets and using the table in this video you can decipher nearly all Yant you got. And there are 5 words that appear like 80% of the Yant you have.

I would like to share this out of amazement and respectful I have to him and thinking that everyone interested in Thai should watch.

(Regarding the word “Sak Yant”, many people use it wrong. Sak สัก is verb meaning “to have tattoo” so Sak Yant is not noun but verb. Many people use it as if it is a noun. Notice Mr.Stuart only mention the thing as “Yant” not “Sak Yant” except when explain from what people familiar with. — In short, you don’t get or have “Sak Yant”, you get “Yant” on your body.)
