CP Foods launches 100% recycled egg carton in Thailand

Food company Charoen Pokphand Foods (CP Foods) announced its new egg tray packaging made from 100% recycled plastic.

The tray is made of 100% recycled Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which consists of 55% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and 45% post-industrial recycled (PIR) plastic.

Additionally, the packaging features paper labels, instead of plastic, to help in waste separation and the recycling process. The trays are now available in retail stores across Thailand.

“Using fully recycled plastic for our fresh egg trays significantly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29% compared to virgin plastic packaging,” stated Kitti Wangwiwatsilp, CP Foods Director of Packaging Research & Development.

According to Wangwiwatsilp, CP Foods has been working to increase the use of recycled materials in its packaging to support the company’s broader commitment to heart-healthy food production and environmental sustainability. The packaging is a step toward achieving CP Foods’ goal of net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.

Earlier this year, CP Foods stated that it is actively advancing the development of its low-carbon and carbon-neutral products and is aiming for 40% of its revenue to be derived from environmentally friendly products by 2030. As of now, CP Foods has developed 880 products that have endured carbon footprint assessments by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO).

CP Foods’ carbon-neutral cage-free eggs

Another step CP Foods has taken towards producing more environmentally friendly products is the creation of its carbon-neutral cage-free eggs.

Somkid Wannalukkhee, head of CP Foods’ egg sector, said that to achieve carbon-neutral status in its eggs, the company had to:

  • Install a smart egg conveyor system – an automated system to reduce the number of damaged eggs
  • Reduce food loss, based on the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) principles, from its production process
  • Use crushed eggshells from egg processing plants as soil improvement material that is delivered to farmers
  • Adopt renewable energy in layer farms and processing plants, such as biogas from waste management systems, and install solar panels
  • Offset remaining emissions through carbon credit purchases

According to company, its eggs show a 30% GHG emission reduction below the industry average for similar eggs. Additionally, CP Foods said its future goals include developing a cage-free layer facility that operates using 100% renewable energy.
