Couple of queries about cancelling work permit/ visa extension

OK, so I’m currently on a visa extension, from a NON-B, which lasts until November 2024.

I’m planning on taking a break/sabbatical from Thailand from August – December 2024, but I will be returning to my job in January 2025 or thereafter. Obviously, I’ll miss the chance to extend my current visa, and will need to begin the process again.

When I leave the country, so I have heard, I’ll need to cancel my visa extension. Is this straightforward to do? Can it be done at any immigration office (countrywide) or does it need to be done from the office where I obtained the extension?

Or alternatively, if I submit my work permit to the HR lady at work, can she get it done, after I’ve left the country already?

If I just leave the country without cancelling the extension, and then return in Jan 2025, and attempt to apply for a new visa, what effect would the uncancelled extension have? I’ve heard there is some hassle involved, but this may be easier than having to fly to Bangkok and back to get the original extension cancelled.
