Cold freeze in Thailand as temperatures may dip to 1 degrees Celsius in most regions

BANGKOK (Bernama): Thailand will experience a cooler weather as temperatures are forecast to dip by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius starting Dec 20 to Dec 25 in Bangkok and most of Thailand except the south.

Thailand’s Meteorological Department said the temperatures are set to plummet as a powerful high pressure front from China sweeps in.

It said a cold wave is expected to bring temperature drops of 5-8 degrees Celsius in the Northeast, 4-6 degrees Celsius in the North, 3-5 degrees Celsius in Central Thailand (including Bangkok) and the East, and 2-4 degrees Celsius in the upper southern region between Dec 20 and 25.

“A strong low-pressure area in the lower South China Sea is likely to move across the lower Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, eventually reaching the lower Andaman Sea to bring heavy to very heavy rain to many areas in the lower southern region.

“This could trigger sudden and dangerous flash floods, particularly in hillside areas,” it said.

The Meteorological Department said strong waves are also forecast for the Gulf of Thailand from Dec 22 to 25.

“Waves between 2 and 4 metres high are expected across the Gulf, with even higher waves exceeding 4 metres in areas experiencing thunderstorms,” it said.

It added that small boat operators in the Gulf of Thailand are strongly advised to exercise caution and avoid venturing out during the period. – Bernama
