CK Power revenue falls as El Niño hits dams in Laos

SET-listed CK Power (CKP), the power generation arm of Ch Karnchang Plc, Thailand’s second-largest construction firm, expects to earn more in the rainy season after seeing revenue fall by 3.5% to 2.5 billion baht in the second quarter of this year, caused by El Niño-induced drought.

The company operates two dams in Laos: Nam Ngum 2 Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Nam Ngum River, a tributary of the Mekong River, and the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Mekong River. Both facilities have undergone lower water volumes, leading to a decline in the volume of electricity sold.

“This year, El Niño has ushered in another intense dry season,” said Thanawat Trivisvavet, managing director of CKP.
