Chonburi Police Commander Accused of Allegedly Extorting 140 Million Baht From Victims Over Online Gambling

The Chonburi Provincial Police Commander is being accused of allegedly extorting 140 million baht from victims over online gambling websites.

Six unidentified victims have filed a reported to the Kukot Police in Pathum Thani on Friday (June 16^th). They told police investigators that the Chonburi Provincial Police Commander Major General Kamphon Leelaprapaporn and about ten other officers, most high-ranking, allegedly extorted 140 million baht from them.

The victims told the Kukot Police that they were arrested by the Chonburi Provincial Police for running illegal gambling websites, which they admitted to doing. However, instead of being taken to court and going through normal legal processes they were allegedly taken by other low-ranking police to meet with the Chonburi Provincial Police Commander at the Chonburi Provincial Police Station. They were then allegedly extorted money to allow them to “bury” the case. The Commander reportedly asked the victims how much they “loved him” in terms of money in order to drop the charges.

The alleged extortion incidents reportedly occurred from May 23^rd to May 27 last month and were at six areas including Bangkok, Banglamung Police Station, Saensuk Police Station in Chonburi, a parking area at a housing estate in Lamlukka in Pathum Thani, and near a temple in Mae Saruai in Chiang Rai.

Victims want legal action to be taken against the Chonburi Provincial Police Commander and others who have been involved in the alleged extortion, threatening and detainment incidents. An in-depth investigation is being conducted over the accusations.

The suspects have yet to release an official statement or plea to the accusations and were taken into custody following the charges.

This isn’t the first recent major incident with top ranking Chonburi police. Another incident, which is below, took place in February in which high-ranking police were allegedly caught extorting large amounts of money from tourists for vaping.
