On December 25th, 2023, Dr. Thongchai Keeratihatthayakorn, the Thai Department of Medical Services acting director-general, publicly revealed academic research from China pointing out that smoking e-cigarettes causes asthma symptoms.
According to research from Chinese scholars, the relationship between vaping and asthma in teenagers showed that smoking e-cigarettes has a 1.31 times higher risk of developing asthma, and smoking e-cigarettes regularly has a 1.36 times higher risk of developing asthma.
Dr. Thongchai added that the Thai Department of Disease Control officials advised stopping smoking both e-cigarettes and tobacco as it contains high nicotine, volatile organic and chemical compounds, and toxic heavy metals that cause fine particles in the lungs and bloodstream which can develop asthma symptoms.
Furthermore, smoking and vaping in public areas would be fined not exceeding 5,000 baht under the Tobacco Product Control Act 2017.
