Child passport question

Had to rewrite this the correct way.

My passport is valid but my 11 year old sons passport is new ish (only 3 months old). I keep seeing info saying the passport has to be least 6 months old. I’m hearing from people there that if the parents passport meets the requirements (older than 6 month) then your minor child’s passport does not have to meet the less then 6 months of validity requirement and they get to piggy back off the parents. Anyone got any intel on this?
