Chiang Mai University not public access?

I will be in Chiang Mai soon, and one of the things I was thinking of doing was taking short motorbike ride through the university. I know there isn’t anything special to see there, but I thought it would be interesting to check out the campus, plus it seems like a quieter way to get from the East end of Suthep to the East end of Huay Kaew.

Anyways, doing some research online, it seems to indicate that the general public is not allowed onto the campus? Anyone confirm if this is true? Or maybe you can walk in but not bring in a vehicle? I can see on google maps street view that there are definitely security checkpoints on roads entering the campus, so don’t want to try to ride in w/ my non-existent Thai and confuse the security guards if I’m not allowed.
