Chiang Mai Region Question

My husband and I are planning a trip to Chiang Mai and are trying to decide between staying in the city or at a resort outside of the city in the mountains. We love the idea of staying outside of the city but want to make sure we will be able to still get around to see different things and not just stay at the resort. Is it easier to stay in the city where tours can pick you up and take you someplace?
