Bangkok shutters 9 fresh markets where new outbreaks spread virus

Several fresh markets throughout the metro area were ordered shut after hundreds of new coronavirus infections were traced to them.

The Khlong Toei, Sam Yan and Bangkapi markets are among nine ordered shut by City Hall for disinfection and proactive COVID-19 tests on vendors. 

The Khlong Toei Market, located downtown in what’s regarded as Bangkok’s biggest slum, has been the hardest hit, with over 1,000 cases discovered in the latest outbreak. It has been ordered shut until at least June 4.

The full list of closures includes:

  • Yingcharoen Market: Closed until May 24
  • Din Daeng Market: Closed today
  • Lam Nok Kwaek Market: Closed today
  • Sai Net Market: Closed until May 22
  • Sala Nam Rong: Closed until May 22
  • Pooyai Auan Market: Closed until May 22
  • Bang Kapi Market: Closed until May 22
  • Khlong Toei Market: Closed until June 4
  • Nong Chok Market: Closed until May 31
