Bangkok Gov. Aswin to step down, likely to seek election

Bangkok Gov. Aswin Kwanmuang said that he will resign from his position tomorrow in the run up to May’s gubernatorial election. 

Speculation holds that 71-year-old Aswin will join the field of candidates seeking his position after he hands his resignation letter to Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda.

Bangkok will go to the polls May 22, according to the Election Commission. On the same date, Pattaya City will elect a new mayor. Candidates may register to run March 31 to April 4. 

The pool of likely candidates so far is commanded – according to polls – by former Pheu Thai Party Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt, who is expected to face off against Wiroj Laikhana-adisorn of the opposition Move Forward Party, and Suchatvee Suwansawat of the old-guard Democrat Party.

Aswin’s resignation will result in his management team’s duties being terminated….
