Authorities Crack Down on Gambling at Illegal Cockfighting Den Near Pattaya

Chonburi —

On Sunday afternoon, a joint operation led by Banglamung District Chief Veekit Manarotkit successfully shut down an illegal cockfighting gambling den in Banlamung, Chonburi, and apprehended 45 individuals involved in the activity.

Acting on public complaints, Mr. Veekit swiftly mobilized law enforcement to raid the den hidden in Soi Baan Kreak, Nong Pla Lai, on February 11th, 2024. Undercover agents infiltrated the cockfighting ring while officers established a perimeter around the premises.

The den, concealed amidst cassava plantations, had over 50 vehicles parked nearby. Inside, four active cockfighting arenas were hosting dozens of Thai gamblers placing bets on the roosters.

As authorities moved in, gamblers became aware of the police and attempted to escape into the surrounding fields. However, the Banglamung police’s swift action eventually led to the apprehension of 45 individuals and the confiscation of 18 fighting cocks. Betting notes and cash amounting to several thousand baht were also seized as evidence.

According to the police, Mr. Chaiwat Nuanchan, 66, was identified as the owner of the den. He reportedly leased the space and facilitated cockfighting, charging a commission on each bet. Mr. Chaiwat admitted his involvement and now faces legal repercussions, along with other gamblers.

The Pattaya News notes that cockfighting is NOT illegal in Thailand and is considered a historic cultural heritage activity. However, gambling IS illegal and is why the venue was raided.
