Ashes drama sparks headlines war in England and Down Under

Whatever one’s views of the controversial “stumping” of Jonny Bairstow in the second Ashes Test it will always be remembered for the astonishing scenes at Lord’s, considered to be the home of cricket since it was established in 1814.

Lord’s is regarded as one of the most sedate English cricket grounds where good play is greeted by polite applause, nothing too raucous. Stuffy members in their jackets and ties are on hand to ensure no-one misbehaves.

But you would have not recognised the place last Sunday when Lord’s resembled a rowdy football stadium with loud booing and an angry crowd chanting “same old Aussies, always cheating” and other expressions of discontent. Nobody had ever witnessed Lord’s quite like that. Even the MCC members joined the fray with three of them suspended for being abusive to the Aussie players.
