Arts&Culture Newsletter: Vanguard Culture’s latest film series explores what it means to be a woman

Good morning, and welcome to the U-T Arts & Culture Newsletter.

I’m David L. Coddon, and here’s your guide to all things essential in San Diego’s arts and culture this week.

The third in Vanguard Culture’s four “History of Joy” films, premiering tonight poses the question: “What does it mean to be a woman?”

That’s director Susanna Peredo Swap talking. She’s the co-collaborator, with playwright Gill Sotu, on this series, which was inspired by “The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World” by the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and Douglas Abrams.

The History of Joy: Womxn” unfolds in two parts. In Part One, actor Amy Dell portrays, according to Peredo Swap, “a woman finally finding forgiveness for all of those things society wants from us as women.” She is accompanied by dancer Bethany Green from the Rosin Box Project.
