Allegedly Intoxicated Thai Woman Causes Car Pileup on Jomtien Beach

Pattaya —

A Thai woman, whom Pattaya police described as intoxicated, caused a massive car pileup involving seven cars on Jomtien Beach Road early Sunday morning.

Pattaya police and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene in front of Soi 8 around 2:30 AM, January 14th, to find a chaotic scene, with seven damaged cars obstructing traffic.

Among the damaged vehicles was a Toyota Vios sedan bearing Bangkok registration plates, driven by 43-year-old Ms. Surapha (last name withheld pending investigation). Ms. Surapha was reported by police to be visibly injured on the head and reeked of alcohol. She was accompanied by an unidentified foreign boyfriend. Pattaya police said the Thai woman was uncooperative as she repeatedly shouted at the officers, rescue workers, and press and denied being drunk.

Pattaya police quickly worked to clear the road of the obstructing vehicles. In total, two pickup trucks and five sedans had sustained varying degrees of damage. Luckily, there were no reports of other injuries except for Ms. Surapha.

One of the pickup truck owners, 28-year-old Mr. Natchai Phudech, recounted the moment of the collision. He stated to The Pattaya News that he and his friend were seated in the back of his truck when Ms. Surapha’s speeding sedan slammed into their vehicle from behind. Thankfully, they managed to escape unharmed before the sedan went on to collide with other cars in a domino effect.

Police took Ms. Surapha to the Dongtan police station and conducted an alcohol breath test on her. In a shocking revelation, police reported that her blood alcohol content measured a staggering 189 milligrams, far exceeding the legal limit of 50 milligrams per deciliter. Legal proceedings are underway, and charges are expected to be filed against the Thai woman.

Ms. Surapha declined to give a statement to the Thai media.
