The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) warns restaurants of scammers who disguise themselves as customers and ask for refunds via food delivery apps.
CCIB spokesman Pol. Col. Krishna Pattanacharoen said scammers are taking advantage of the widespread usage of food delivery applications in Thailand.
These scammers impersonate customers and deceive unaware restaurants by requesting refunds, claiming they did not receive the right order.
Pol. Col. Krishna said this kind of scam is getting more prevalent based on the number of online complaints that the CCIB receives. According to the statistics from March 1st, 2022, to June 5th, 2023, there have been 9,768 reported cases of such fraudulent activities, accounting for 3.58% of the total reported online crime cases and incurring a damage of 351 million baht.
According to Pol. Col. Krishna, those involved in this kind of scam are liable to imprisonment of no more than five years and a fine of no more than 100,000 baht or both. They also violate the computer crimes act which carries a fine of no more than 100,000 baht and an imprisonment of no more than five years or both.
