Weather gets best of locals at CCS Girls Golf Championships – Santa Cruz Sentinel

CARMEL — The weather was nobody’s friend at the Central Coast Section Girls Golf Championships at Laguna Seca Golf Ranch on Tuesday. Scotts Valley High freshman Ashley Gettleman and senior teammate Elana McGrew attested to that.

Cold, wind and rain wreaked havoc on the field of 114 players. Three players withdrew.

Gettleman, the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion, shot 82 and tied for 28th, and McGrew, the SCCAL runner-up who qualified with an at-large berth, shot 88 and tied for 43rd.

“It was horrible weather,” said Gettleman, who had to chase her umbrella down two fairways after it blew from her push cart. She said her push cart was blown over on multiple occasions by gusts that she estimated to be 30 mph.

Because her umbrella blew from her cart often, rendering it useless, she took the brunt of the weather system. And she wasn’t alone.
