The Bay of Bengal is set to witness the formation of the first cyclone of the 2022 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, as a potent system brews in the cyclone hotbed that is referred to as the Bay of Sorrow.

Upon this system’s intensification into a cyclonic storm, it will be named Cyclone Asani — a name given by Sri Lanka which translates to ‘wrath’ in Sinhala, the country’s official and most widely-spoken language.

But how and why the name Asani, you ask?

To begin with, let’s understand why cyclones are named in the first place. As per a decree issued by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), each cyclone must be named in order to avoid confusion in the instances where multiple systems operate in one location.
