Weather in Spain warning as temperatures set to exceed 40C

People heading to Spain on holiday this week are being warned to be prepared for temperatures that could exceed 40C. Warnings have been issued for “extreme” heat that is “unusual” for May.

Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET has warned that temperatures could exceed 40C this week, reports the Irish Mirror. They are predicted to pass the mid-30s in many areas.

A spokesperson said: “Very high temperatures will exceed 35C in many parts of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. It may reach 40C to 42C in parts of the south and Ebro, with very warm nights. It will be a truly unusual episode for the time.”

Forecasts predict that daytime temperatures will be around the mid-30s, but in some areas could pass 40C. Visitors can also expect “tropical nights” with temperatures not dropping below 20C.
