Turkey halts search for quake debris except for Kahramanmarash-Hathai

Death toll from major earthquake in Turkey that devastated Syria More than two weeks after rescuers searched for people who may still be trapped under the rubble, more than 44,330 have now been found.

The death toll is 40,642 in Turkey and 3,688 in Syria. Because international aid has only recently reached Syria.

Recently, Turkey announced the end of search and rescue efforts in affected areas across the country. Except in two provinces, Kahramanmaras and Hatai. However, hopes of finding someone still alive beneath the rubble quickly diminished.

The death toll is expected to rise further. As many as 345,000 residential buildings in Turkey have been damaged. And there are still many people missing. Neither Turkey nor Syria have disclosed how many people remain unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Anthony Blingen arrived in Turkey to look at the affected areas. It announced that the United States would provide $100 million in humanitarian assistance to Turkey.
