Thai PM issues new restrictions as virus surges

The Thai government ordered fresh restrictions on Friday in an attempt to curb the spread of a new coronavirus wave, as the country hit a daily record for new cases. In the televised news conference Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said that despite the risk the government would not order a blanket curfew but a ban on certain activities and limited operating hours for restaurants and malls.

The prime minister said the decision to impose restrictions is difficult one to make because of the economic impact it has. He also warned activists to refrain from gathering for rallies during this time, but stressed that he was “not making a threat”. Thailand has seen pro-democracy protests over the course of the year, with large crowds gathering in rallies.
