Sky News’ Doomsday Article – A Reader’s Reaction

We’ve received a few messages from people about the dismal Sky News report that came out about COVID in Thailand. Most messages were just asking if we had seen the video, here is one of the reactions that was submitted:

The way Sky News portrayed the COVID situation in Pattaya was extremely over-dramatic. They spoke with about 3 adult escort workers throughout the entire video as they followed them down completely empty streets in Pattaya and made it seem as though the entire country was impoverished and on the verge of death from starving.

The reality of the situation on the ground here in Pattaya is…a little different. Firstly, are there hungry people? Sure there are. Pattaya IS a tourist city and without tourists people are hurting. That being said, the virus here in Thailand has brought out the good in many people and the community has stepped up to help the needy.

All over town businesses and good Samaritans have set it up so the Thais can come get free meals, some giving out over a thousand free meals per day.

The Sky News video mostly followed a single transgender adult escort, though they discussed the thousands of escorts who are supposedly hurting for money. Sky News has clearly never heard of dating apps. Say what you want about Thai women but they will find a way to survive and make it work. Some bars will likely have problems getting some of their girls who have become online entrepreneurs to return.

Why is it that sky news followed the trans-gendered woman only and talked to two extremely overweight escorts on the beach? I guess Pattaya was all out of normal bar girls to speak to?

The best video I have seen to describe what is currently going on here in Thailand is the video from Fabulous 103 FM (Below). Sky News could have gathered a wealth of information on the situation here in Thailand, instead they created a shortened version of I Am Legend.

From us on on the ground here in Pattaya, do not believe everything you see on the mainstream media. There still seems to be an agenda to push fear out to the masses. Aside from the fear that some businesses may flounder, or that tourists will not return, there is no fear here in Pattaya at the moment. The community is doing all they can to make sure that nobody goes without. It is hard, but the kindhearted people here on the ground are making it work.

We will see bars open back up very soon (with some social distancing regulations at first) and Pattaya businesses will hopefully start being able to generate what they need for their owners to pay rent and survive until borders open back up. It is an ever-changing scene here on the ground, but NOTHING like Sky News or their lone transgender would have you believe.
