Personalized license plates coming to Thailand

Ready to roll though town boasting your name across your ride’s grill? Personalized license plates have been approved for the first time and may be available to motorists by mid-year.

Forget traditional plates that have only two Thai letters, some numbers and province name. Owners of vehicles with no more than seven seats will be able to have longer strings of letters, plus vowels and tone marks to create a word, government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said yesterday. She said the sales of such plates, approved Tuesday by the cabinet, would go to a government road safety fund.

“Anyone who wants their name on the plate, they can have it, like Traisuree 1 Bangkok, or Amornthep 9 Bangkok, or Prayuth 1 Bangkok,” she said.

How to order a personalized plate isn’t clear yet; Traisuree said the Transport Ministry needs time to work out the regulations.
