Flooding from unusually heavy summer rains in Sudan has killed at least 90 people and destroyed tens of thousands of homes in the African nation.

In recent days, the floodwaters have spread into the capital city of Khartoum where residents were building barricades as the Nile River flowed into several districts, the Associated Press reported.

Since mid-July, the heavy rains and flash floods have killed nearly 90 people across 17 states in Sudan, according to early figures from the government’s Humanitarian Aid Commission.
