At least 23 children and several adults have been killed in the attack on a children’s daycare centre.

More than 30 people have been killed in a mass shooting at a children’s daycare centre in a northeastern province of Thailand, a police spokesperson said.

Victims included children and adults, police said in a statement on Thursday, adding that the gunman was an ex-police officer and a manhunt was under way.

Police Major General Achayon Kraithong said the gunman opened fire early in the afternoon in the centre in the town of Nong Bua Lamphu.

He said 30 people were killed but had no more details. Following the shooting, the assailant took his own life.

A spokesperson for a regional public affairs office said 26 deaths have been confirmed so far – 23 children, two teachers and one police officer were among the deceased.
