TAK: The Karen National Union (KNU) has promised to protect its people holding rallies against the coup in Myanmar.
The KNU said on Wedneday many ethnic Karen were on the streets in Kawkareik township, calling for the ousting of the junta and release of National League for Democracy Party leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The KNU said they would provide protection for them.
The Myanmar army warned on Tuesday that protests across the country were viewed as inciting violence.
Kawkareik is about 50 kilometres from the Thai border, opposite Mae Sot district in Tak.
Thai security forces along the Myanmar border have been on alert since the coup on Feb 1.
