Eastern teams are no longer cannon fodder

In the NBA, it used to be that the West was best and the East was least.

For years, when play-off time came around, strong Los Angeles Lakers teams, the perennially talented San Antonio Spurs, the Houston Rockets or some other outstanding Western Conference ballclubs would go at it tooth and nail for that conference’s title — and, essentially, the NBA crown as well.

Because, with rare exception, they would then steamroll the winners of the less-talented Eastern Conference crown in the finals.

It was a foregone conclusion that, save for the occasional Boston Celtics NBA titles, the Eastern survivors would merely serve as cannon fodder for the Western winners.

But not anymore. You could say things have flip-flopped.
