Chen ends Yamaguchi’s dream of 2nd All England title

China’s Chen Yufei knocked out defending champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the women’s singles semi-finals of the US$1.25 million BWF All England Open in Birmingham yesterday.

Tokyo Olympic champion Chen, who is seeded fourth in Birmingham, eased past top seed Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-8 to book her place in the final of the World Tour Super 1000 event at Utilita Arena Birmingham.

Chen, who won the tournament in 2019, will play the winner of the second semi-final between South Korean second seed An-Se Young, who was a finalist last year, and third seed Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan, the two-time champion (2018 and 2020).

In the mixed doubles semi-finals, top seeds Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China edged past Rehan Kusharjanto and Lisa Kusumawati of Indonesia 21-17, 13-21, 21-13.
