Born to be an adventurer

The depths of the sea is dark and impenetrable but Robert Ballard feels comfortable in this space, which has no bounds.

When he looks out of a small window, he is in his own version of Captain Nemo’s Nautilus. This is the world of the legendary deep-sea explorer who has conducted over 150 expeditions and found the wreck of the Titanic.

The sinking of the largest passenger ship of its time has captured the public imagination for over a century. On April 10, 1912, the liner set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York but just four days later, it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank in less than three hours.

It was not until 1985 that Ballard located the wreck but nobody knew that it was a cover for a now-declassified military operation to recover two nuclear submarines — the USS Thresher and the USS Scorpion — that went…
