Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar: Guv carries Buddha’s relics to Thailand | Patna News


Patna: Bihar governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday accompanied the sacred relics of Lord Buddha from India to Thailand for a 26-day public exposition in the southeast Asian country.
Arlekar and Union minister of social justice and empowerment Virendra Kumar also led a 22-member Indian delegation from New Delhi which reached Bangkok around noon.
The delegation comprised monks from Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh), Aurangabad, Ladakh, officials from the Union ministry of culture, Madhya Pradesh govt, curators from the National Museum, artists and scholars, a central government official told TOI.
The revered relics of the Lord Buddha along with those of his esteemed disciples, Arahant Sariputra and Arahant Maudgalyayana, will be securely housed at the National Museum in Bangkok. This is the first time that the holy relics of Lord Buddha and his disciples will be showcased together.
“I feel proud to carry the message of Lord Buddha to Thailand. Lord Buddha dedicated his life to humanity. Today, the revered relics of Lord Buddha are being taken to Thailand. This will strengthen the India-Thailand relations,” Arlekar said before leaving for Thailand from New Delhi airport.
“Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will organize a prayer before the relics at the Royal Grand Palace in Sanam Luang on February 23. After that, common people can view the relics on Makha Bucha festival,” a communique issued from the Bihar Raj Bhavan said. This year’s Makha Bucha Day falls on February 24.
