The renowned Yaowarat Road in Bangkok’s Chinatown will get a new look early next year, deputy Bangkok governor Sakoltee Phattiyakul announced on Monday.

“After January, people will see a noticeable change along Yaowarat Road,” Mr Sakoltee told food vendors and local officials who attended a meeting on the famed strip’s planned revitalisation.

“The food carts will be more ordered, their appearance will be harmonised and the operations will be more environmentally friendly.”

Protesters face water cannons as they deliver thousands of letters to HM the King

Police turned the water cannons on thousands of protesters again as they tried to march to the Grand Palace to symbolically deliver hand-written letters to the Thai King. Thai media reports the crowd numbers were up to 10,000 – 12,000. Police say the crowd was around 7,000.

Police used high power water cannons for only the second time after months of mostly peaceful protests to demand greater democracy. This time the cannons appeared to use just water after lacing the water with blue dye when last used at the Pathumwan Intersection in central Bangkok on October 16.

After police had earlier blockaded access to the Royal Plaza and…

Prayuth floats ‘reconciliation’ panel to fix constitution

0

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha said today that a “reconciliation committee” comprised of lawmakers, senators and protest movement figures would study ways to amend the constitution.

Following a two-day emergency parliamentary session, Prayuth said he would support revising the charter to solve the problems raised by the pro-democracy movement through compromise and “peaceful” methods.

“Everyone is Thai, and I don’t hate anyone, even whoever accuses me of anything,” he said. “I can listen, and I have to be patient as a prime minister. No issue can’t be solved, so I ask you to trust that we will choose the best solution for our country and not just me.”

He told the parliament yesterday that the process of reviewing changes to the charter would be completed by December.

That’s far from what the protest movement’s been demanding. In recent…

Stocks skyrocketed and bond yields surged as investors bet Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine will help the broader economy recover and revive cyclicals and other industries that were beaten down by the pandemic.

The Dow was up nearly 3%, while Nasdaq fell 1.5 as laggard sectors like energy and financials outperformed tech. Stay-at-home plays, like Netflix and Zoom were sharply lower, but airlines rallied 16%. The S&P energy sector, still down 45% this year, was up more than 14%, and financials were up 8%.

Pfizer announced earlier Monday that its vaccine is more than 90% effective, and while it will not be broadly distributed for months, investors bet that the economy will reopen and people will travel, return to…

Indian opportunity

India is the world’s fifth-largest economy, and one of the fastest-growing in the world. The size of the Indian market, and its increasingly critical role in global supply chains, mean India and its trading partners have much to gain.

Simon Cooper, CEO for corporate, commercial and institutional banking at Standard Chartered SUPPLIED

As one of the world’s largest economies by gross domestic product (GDP) and with a sizeable youth demographic and a growing middle class, India is an attractive market for exporters. Its next challenge is to take its place as one of the globe’s most important trading nations.

However, there are some significant barriers to trade. Although import tariffs on goods were lowered substantially in the 1990s and 2000s, they have been raised again since 2017, and are now comparatively high.

The Delhi government also has relatively…

Purpose-driven business

Nearly 10 months since coronavirus lockdowns first started, many companies have been pushed close to the abyss by the sharp curtailment of business activity and greatly reduced revenues.

Asia, home to some of the world’s fastest-growing economies, has already seen declining growth and rising poverty. Many executives have had to make painful decisions to suspend or lay off staff at the peak of the protracted pandemic.

The tourism industry, on which many regional economies including Thailand rely so heavily, has been devastated. Millions of people have lost income and jobs, from food vendors to staff of giant household names like Traveloka and AirAsia.

According to a World Bank forecast, the pandemic will cause the deepest recession since World War II, with global growth contracting by 5.2% and the largest proportion of economies…

The Central Bankruptcy Court has approved Nok Air’s petition to begin a rehabilitation process, as the low-cost airline struggles with losses incurred due to the Covid-19 economic fallout. The Bangkok Post reports that Nok Air has debts of up to 26 billion baht, with 23 billion baht in assets. In the first half of 2020, it reported revenue of 3.4 billion baht, a drop of nearly 48% on the same period last year. The carrier recorded a net loss of 3.75 billion baht in the first half of this year, up from the 1.18 billion baht loss from the same period in 2019.
