Thailand to cut quarantine to 10 days – but add more rules

0

Quarantine limbo time is about to get slashed by a third for those riding out the symptom-window in Thailand.

Health officials have agreed to cut four days and adopt a 10-day quarantine period for those lucky souls entering or returning to the kingdom, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters today.

He cited the nation’s low risk level and sparse local infections to make the move, adding that the health system has become more experienced in handling the disease effectively since it emerged 10 months ago. Thailand’s tourism-reliant economy is buckling under the strain and the public is split on reopening the nation.

Update: Backtracking, Thailand cuts quarantine time for only 6 nationalities

“The Disease Control Department has been ready for quarantine reduction for a long time now, but the case of the French woman made us withdraw the subject…

Cash burn has fallen to about S$300 million ($223 million) a month from about S$350 million in the three months to July, Chief Financial Officer Stephen Barnes said.

The carrier has already raised S$11.3 billion in funds…

The Move Forward Party has slammed Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for aborting its military conscription bill by refusing to endorse it.

The bill, one of its electoral pledges, makes military drafting voluntary during peacetime.

List MP Rangsiman Rome told a briefing at Parliament on Monday that the House Secretariat informed him Gen Prayut had not endorsed the bill, which had been submitted by Lt Gen Pongsakorn Rodchompoo and other Future Forward MPs last year before the party was dissolved.

Section 133 of the constitution requires that any bill that involves finances or uses the state budget must first be endorsed by the prime minister before it can be debated in the…

At Mandalay, Burmese and Thai magic in the Falls | Restaurants

Poached shrimp, imitation crab stick and calamari cut so that when poached it curls into bite-sized seafood hedgehogs that hold sauce like ridged pasta. You might even find tiny dried shrimp, the raisins of the sea.

Salads are a strength of these cuisines, such that one and a pile of rice is a meal, not just a pregame warmup or a throw-in. There are eaters of some ambition who have still never tried tea leaf salad ($9.99), or le peth thoat, the Burmese national dish.

Leaves that others may dry for beverage use are harvested and pickled, like sauerkraut, to extend the season. Fried beans and peas, plus shredded cabbage, make the salad crunchy as heck. Tomato adds juice, then the whole shebang gets a toss in lime and garlic oil dressing.

Pressure has mounted over treatments of conscripts over the past week after two were found dead in their bases in the Northeast.

Relatives of one of them on Monday asked the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) to handle the case, citing pressure on the family and local police.

Pvt Pichawat Wiangnon, 22, was found hanged on Friday at the 27th Miltary Circle in Roi Et province.

Army deputy spokesperson Col Sirichan Ngathong said Pvt Pichawat had taken a leave on Oct 24 but failed to show up for work later. Protesters face water cannons as they deliver thousands of letters to HM the King

Police turned the water cannons on thousands of protesters again as they tried to march to the Grand Palace to symbolically deliver hand-written letters to the Thai King. Thai media reports the crowd numbers were up to 10,000 – 12,000. Police say the crowd was around 7,000.

Police used high power water cannons for only the second time after months of mostly peaceful protests to demand greater democracy. This time the cannons appeared to use just water after lacing the water with blue dye when last used at the Pathumwan Intersection in central Bangkok on October 16.

After police had earlier blockaded…
