Twilight Payment (R) of Ireland, ridden by Jye McNeil, won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington

MELBOURNE – Irish raider Twilight Payment won the coveted Aus$8.0 million (US$5.5 million) Melbourne Cup at an eerily quiet Flemington on Tuesday, with the “race that stops a nation” run behind closed doors for the first time.

With Jye McNeil in the saddle, the eight-year-old gelding held off a charging Tiger Moth and Prince of Arran in a thrilling finish to the gruelling 3,200-metre (two mile) handicap, considered the ultimate test of stamina and staying power.

Anthony Van Dyck, one of the pre-race favourites, was “humanely euthanised” after breaking down with 500 metres remaining, Racing Victoria said.

“There’s so many emotions, it’s such a big moment, it’s a miracle,” said McNeil, one of the rising stars of the…

Digital Economy and Society Minister Buddhipongse Punnakanta has become a target of criticism after his ministry blocked access to Pornhub, a well-known adult website based outside the country.

The ministry on Monday ordered all internet providers and mobile phone operators to ban all access to the website after the Criminal Court gave the ministry the green light to take action, because porn websites are illegal in Thailand.

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 190 URL addresses of the website, which claims to be the world’s leading free porn site, had been blocked under the DES order.

But instead of…

Exports may drop only 7% this year – shippers

0

Thailand’s exports may drop by 7% this year, an improvement on the 8-10% drop projected earlier and helped by a gradual recovery in global demand, but a strong baht remains a concern, the Thai shipping association said on Tuesday.

“After a positive surprise in September’s shipments, we expect exports to improve further this year,” Ghanyapad Tantipipatpong, chairwoman of the Thai National Shippers’ Council, told a briefing.

Exports, a key driver of Thai growth, contracted a less than expected 3.86% in September from a year earlier.

The US presidential election and second coronavirus waves globally should not have a big impact on exports in the fourth quarter as orders had been made in advance, she said.

However, the current baht level at 31 per US dollar is still far stronger than the 34 baht needed to support exports, the group said.

The council will meet with…

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey will stay on in his leading role, the social media platform’s board ruled after an activist investor’s bid to oust him

SAN FRANCISCO – Twitter’s board on Monday said Jack Dorsey will remain chief after a management review prompted by an activist investor’s effort to push him out of the job.

Twitter in March made a deal with key investors to end an effort to oust Dorsey, creating a new committee on the board of directors to keep tabs on company leadership.

The plan called for a fresh investment in Twitter by private equity group Silver Lake, and a pledge by the social media group to launch a $2 billion share repurchase plan.

The deal also enabled the hedge fund Elliot Management — which had been pressing to remove Dorsey — to get its partner Jesse Cohn a seat on the board of the…

BRISBANE (AUSTRALIA) – Since Li Cunxin was plucked from rural China to join Madame Mao’s elite ballet school, through his exile in the US and now the pandemic, his life has been a reluctant pas de deux with politics.

The 59-year-old artistic director of the Queensland Ballet — one of Australia’s premier dance companies — prefers to focus discussion on his art.

But his ascent from humble beginnings has been punctuated by political turmoil — from the horrors of Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward to life in exile, to the anti-Chinese backlash of today’s coronavirus pandemic.

Li was born in 1961 as…
