PRACHIN BURI: An elderly couple went missing after their house was swept away by a flash flood that engulfed two villages in Nadi district of this central province east of Bangkok early Sunday, local media reported.

Heavy downpours late on Saturday night caused run-off from the Khao Yai and Thap Lan national parks to flow down the Khlong Yang stream to hit Wang Mai and Wang Muen villages in tambon Bu Phram.

Chaiwat Iamla-or, a senior assistant to the Nadi district chief, said the two villages were hit by the flash flood at about 2.30am. The strong current caused damage to 15 houses at Wang Mai and 25 houses at Wang Mued village as well as other property.

A Typhoon Spared the Philippine Capital. Will Manila Be So Lucky Next Time?

BANGKOK — The Philippines was braced for the worst. When Typhoon Goni made landfall in the disaster-plagued nation on Sunday morning, with sustained winds of 135 miles per hour, it ranked as the most powerful storm to hit the Southeast Asian nation in years.

Manila, the low-lying, crowded capital, looked to be squarely in the typhoon’s path. Roughly 1.5 million families in the city live near railroad tracks, garbage dumps and fetid waterways, their flimsy shacks and shantytowns defenseless against every wind gust and storm surge.

But by day’s end, Goni, known locally as Rolly, appeared to have largely bypassed the capital, with no fatalities reported there. At least 10 people were confirmed to have died from the typhoon in the Bicol region southeast of the capital, according to the regional Office of Civil Defense. Rivers overflowed, tree branches flew and wet concrete-like…

Top gun: SCG Muang Thong United forward Willian Popp fires a volley against Buriram United on Saturday night.

SCG Muang Thong United prevailed 3-2 over arch-rivals Buriram United in a clash of two former Thai League 1 champions on Saturday night.

Buriram’s efforts to steal Brazilian coach Alenxandre Gama away from the Kirins a couple of weeks ago failed again to bring about a change in Thunder Castle’s fortunes. They were held to a draw 2-2 draw at lowly Trat last weekend.

The loss at the hands of bitter foes Muang Thong has left Buriram reeling in 11th place in the 16-team top flight.

Hosts Buriram were the first to score when Marko Scepovic struck from close range in the 16th minute only to see Muang Thong’s Lucas Rocha head home a Mirzaev Sardor free-kick on 35 minutes for a 1-1 tie.

The VAR awarded a…
