Almost Like Clockwork, Talk of a Military Coup Follows Thai Protests

BANGKOK — There are certain constants in Thailand: the drenching monsoons, the grand openings of new shopping malls and the rumors that the Royal Thai Armed Forces are plotting another coup.

For weeks now, student-led protesters across Thailand have taken to the streets every few days, calling for a new constitution with authority over the monarchy, an end to the persecution of the political opposition and the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, the retired general who led the most recent military coup, in 2014.

Some earlier antigovernment movements in Thailand were silenced by gunfire, with dozens killed most recently in 2010. While the security forces have not cracked down violently on these peaceful rallies, it’s unclear how long such restraint will last. Nor is it certain how long the army is willing to stay in the barracks, plotting against Mr. Prayuth, who was…

Asia’s factories, including those in Thailand, pushed ahead gradually in October as managers remained upbeat about recovery prospects and local virus outbreaks become less severe, manufacturing gauges show.

South Korea advanced to 51.2 in October from 49.8, and Taiwan stayed particularly strong at 55.1 after September’s 55.2, according to IHS Markit figures released Monday. Thailand also moved above 50, the dividing line between expansion and contraction, while Japan improved to 48.7 from 47.7.

Vietnam and Malaysia retreated, though the former stayed in expansionary territory. Malaysia’s reading of 48.5 was the lowest since May.

The regional figures are getting a lift from China’s ongoing recovery,…

Craig Williams (right) drives Vow and Declare to win last year’s Melbourne Cup in a thrilling finish from Prince of Arran. This year “the race that stops a nation” will be held without spectators for the first time in its 144-year history.

MELBOURNE: Australia’s “race that stops a nation” will Tuesday be staged in front of empty grandstands, devoid of the roars from tens of thousands of punters when the Melbourne Cup is run behind closed doors for the first time in its long history.

Held on the first Tuesday of November since 1876, the punishing 3200 metre handicap is so important that race day is a public holiday in the state that hosts it, Victoria, with the winning horse becoming a household name in Australia.

Hordes of colourfully-dressed spectators usually flock to Flemington for a boozy day out, but…

Extreme weather highlights Southeast Asia’s vulnerability to climate change

0

The region faces the threat of increasing natural disasters as global warming makes extreme weather more likely.

By Zachary Frye

Over the past several weeks, parts of Southeast Asia have been pummeled by severe storms. Widespread flooding across the region, especially in Vietnam, left hundreds of thousands of residents temporarily displaced.

In Vietnam alone, at least 90,000 people were forced from their homes during the first several weeks of October after two heavy tropical storms, Linfa and Nangka, hit the country just days apart.

In the Philippines, tropical storm Saudel made landfall on October 20 and subsequently formed into a typhoon, leading to further flooding in Vietnam. Parts of Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia were also affected.

The latest typhoon, Goni, slammed…
