Phuket Beach Oil Leak situation?

I have been seeing pictures and complaints from tourists regarding Kata and Karon beach having black oil leaks and the tourists’ shoes and legs getting stained with the black oil.

Just wanted to check if that is true and how bad is it, should I avoid going to the beach at all? I have booked a couple nights at a different resorts at Karon beach and Kata beach.
